'LION AND THE MOUSE' antique bookends JENNINGS BROS. C. VIETH
- Item #: 2318
- Manufacturer: Jennings Brothers
Extraordinary set of large, signed antique bookends featuring a Lion and a Mouse. The detailing is excellent. The tiny mouse is well formed as he sits on the edge of the base. The backplate simulates a rocky ledge with greenery. The King Of Beasts sits regally. Each bookend stands 7 1/4" tall, 5 1/2" wide, 5 1/4" deep and weighs almost 3 lbs. They are in very good condition. Authenticity is assured as both are signed C. Vieth on the side and impressed in the rear with the shopmark J.B. 1516. This design was in response to the Aesop's fable of 'The Lion and the Mouse' which was about a lion sleeping when accidentally the mouse awakens him, the lion was going to eat the mouse who begged for his life stating he would save the lion some day if he was spared. The lion laughed and released him. Later, the lion was captured and netted by hunters. The mouse heard his roar and chewed through the net saving the lion. All friendships should be valued.
