Very rare, very heavy, signed, original set of Curtis Jere/Artisan House bookends featuring a man and woman playing tennis. Excellent movement. The figures are made of solid brass and the bases are a large piece of quartz stone. Each base has the court lines painted on them. Very high quality. Each bookend stands 6" tall, 6" long, 5" wide and weighs over 5 lbs. (11 lbs. for the pair). They are in very good condition. The people are in excellent condition. The quartz base has some minor chipping. Authenticity is assured as both are signed C. Jere 1977 on the stone base. As with so many of the Curtis Jere bookends these are a fantastic fun action set. Whenever we can find them we purchase them. Artisan House was founded in 1963. C. Jere is the result of combining the names of the two founders of Artisan House, Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels. These men wanted to create affordable high quality art and sculptures. They succeeded. Today, many of their sculptures sell in the thousands of dollars. The limited number of bookends they produced were all very interesting, focusing on Modernism. The sports related pieces are great fun and highly collectible.
